This week is also gonna be formatted differently, and this writing may not have a satisfying conclusion as it will be my thought process in trying to define, as the title implies, what it means to be “smart” or what exactly the “smart” means, through my own words and thoughts. I do this in a lot of my writings, but this is more or less my process of defining things.
Let’s start with our great friend, google. Smart, adjective, having or showing a quick-witted intelligence. Alright, now let’s define intelligence. Intelligence, noun, the ability to acquire and apply knowledge and skills. Now let’s ask another friend, Socrates, who has stated many times, that knowledge is knowing that you know nothing. Now knowledge, intelligence, and smart seem to be very related words… Well that was fun it seems defined now, I’ll see you next week!
Kidding, now let’s start thinking of the misconceptions, or the things that smart isn’t. On the thumbnail for this writing I put on the cheek of the human like figure, an A?, instead of a normal A+. Asking, are grades what makes someone smart? I don’t think that if you’re getting all A’s in school that you’re smart, not saying you’re not smart, but it’s something me, and many people that I’ve asked that get good grades believe. Then for some reason the people that don’t get all A’s think that’s what it means to be smart. This just doesn’t seem true, lots of people have degrees and good grades but just don’t seem to have that much knowledge in their brain. Many loop holes can be used to achieve good grades.
Another question I would like to ask relates to the top right corner of the thumbnail. I put a brain representing the left and right side of the brain, I then put a question mark atop the right side of the representation. Hinting to the question is creativity and “art” not something that should be considered “smart”? Is it only logic and things like math and science that can make someone “smart”? I just get a feeling this isn’t the case. I mean, creativity is a process, I do cardistry which is considered an art by the community, including me, and I know how hard it is to actually make something that looks good and feels good. It’s not always an instant process, I feel as if creativity, art, and things like writing take brain power, and take time, it’s not just something that happens all the time. Even in this writing I’m taking minutes off thinking of “what could I say next.”, or thinking of how do I answer this question.
With all of this said, the next question would be, can I actually take all of this and define smart. I have a feeling the answer is yes and no. I can find a some sort of definition, but not one that will completely satisfy me. Now let’s see if we can do this. Someone who is smart, is someone that would never call themselves smart, uses a lot of time to amass knowledge, and then puts that knowledge into use. Then, “smart” is an adjective used to describe someone who knows they know nothing, and because of this spends time amassing knowledge for use.
I guess that’s all. I suppose I’ll now refer to smart as an adjective used to describe someone who knows they know nothing, and because of this spends time amassing knowledge for use. I was though right, that definition isn’t exactly satisfying, so if you have an idea thought to add or disagree with I’d love to hear it, toss it in the comments below. I hope this writing helped you understand even a little my extremely scattered process of defining things, it really is just a majpaj of questions used to simplify one concept down into my own words, but everyone’s mind is somewhat different so this may not matter to you. Even so I hope you enjoyed it, have a wonderful week, and peace. Original
