Alright, so I didn't post last week, but wait I have an excuse. I'm kidding, there's no excuses, the truth is that I just wanted a break, and from that break came this writing idea. Now let’s address excuses for a second. Don’t make them, they’re bad, a waste of time, and pointless, again, don’t make them. Back to the topic. I want to talk about taking breaks in things you don’t like to do, taking breaks in things you do like to do, and also a small talk about obsession.
We all have things we don't like to do, whether it be school, or that job you hate. Since you don't want to do this we love it when we have a break. I hate my summer break, and winter break. For a job you might have breaks, or even sick days. Now the first and last thing about this is, if you're doing something you don't like, stop doing it. Quit that job you hate, I mean if you won't quit then stop complaining because, sorry, but no one cares how hard your job is. If you hate it why do it? Joel Salatin, a successful farmer and businessman, once said, "if you ever need a break from your work, never come back." What he means is that you shouldn't do things you don't want to. Don't be one of the people that hate their lives because of their jobs. Actually, most heart related deaths happens on Mondays. On Mondays people have to go back to that job they hate, and the life they don't want to live. Don't be one of those people, don't do something you don't like, so if you want a break just because you don't want to do your work anymore then don't do it. Now what if you do something you love to do, should there be no breaks? No. That's the simple answer. As for why, when you do something you love for two long, you might get burnt out. What this means is that it will make you lose interest and you will not enjoy it as much as you did. Now this doesn't happen in one day, this will be caused by doing it on repeat for a long period time. This especially applies in art. In art you need creativity, and for creativity you need inspiration, and you need to stop doing your art, to find that inspiration. While you inspiration might be someone else doing the same art as you, you still need to put your's down and watch, or look carefully, and see if you can draw some inspiration from it. Taking a break from something will refresh you, and will rejuvenate you for your work or hobby. Another reason you need to take breaks is because of an old expression. "To much of anything isn't good." This is true, no matter how much you love anything, to much of it is not good for you, everything needs to be in moderation, and must be balanced, and you might possibly harm yourself so that you can't do what you love anymore. I know that flute players and other musicians on similar instruments, if they play too long, their wrists will get messed up, and will hurt a lot, especially when trying to play their instrument again. So, keep everything in check. Next is obsession. Obsession is that part of you that does repeat something for a long period of time. It's ok, and a good thing to be obsessed. "What? That contradicts what you just said." I said everything needs to be in moderation, and when you love something enough you will need to obsess over it now and then to truly excel in it. Steve Jobs and the co-founder of apple, Steve Wozniak, didn't sleep for four to five days straight making the Macintosh, they even got a sleep disease afterwards. Opera went two days without eating because she was that focused on accomplishing her dream, that she forgot to eat. These successful people were obsessive, and you will need to be obsessive about your dreams too. Now again keep it in check, if taking a break for one day will enhance your work for the next month, then do it. You need to do what will help you achieve your goal the quickest, and whether that be taking a small break, or going without stopping, you need to do it. Obsession is necessary, obsess over what you love, if it's going around your head all day, it's fine, more ideas will come that way, imagining, come before creating. That's why we think before we speak. That is all for this week, I hope you understand more about breaks. How they factor into things you hate to do, things you love to do, and how it is overtaken by obsession. The most important things were, to stop doing what you don't like, take breaks to get more efficiency in the work you love, and be ready to obsess over your dreams, so you can turn them into reality. Thanks for reading, I'll see you next week, and peace. Original
