We’ve heard a lot of things throughout our lives, some true, and some we come to find out is not so true. It’s true that life’s not fair, we figure that out pretty soon, it’s a lie, that if you go into water after eating you’ll get a stomach cramp. The second statement is known as a misconceptions, which leads us to today’s topic; what is a misconception, how they’re bad, and some that you may or may not have heard before. A misconception in dictionary terms is a view or opinion that is incorrect due to faulty or incorrect thinking. In simplified words, something that is thought to be true, but is actually false. Misconceptions are really hard to spot because of how many times you'll be told it's true, there's rarely anyone that will actually research it or question the statement to find the truth. Fortunately science does study most of these misconceptions and confirms or shoots down these statements. Again though, people won't look it up or see if it's true, if literally everyone tells them it is, then they'll just make an assumption that it's true, and won't have to look it up. This isn't good. Misunderstanding isn't good for anyone. Misconceptions lead to ignorance which is not a good thing, you should know correct information, you don't want to do or make decisions based on misinformation. Another problem with misconceptions is that it's really hard to tell someone that what they think is wrong. There is a psychological effect called the backfire effect. This is an effect where if you're told you're wrong, you'll believe in it even more. People really don't wanna be told they're wrong, I mean the same part of the brain that feels physical pain is triggered when you're told you're wrong. Boy are all people stubborn, haha. Now, let's get on to some misconceptions. First, let's start with Christopher Columbus, a complete fraud. Back in 1492 when Christopher sailed the ocean blue, everyone, and I mean everyone, knew that he world was round, it was very common knowledge. The only reason they didn't sail west is because the landmass known as north and south America, as well as Canada weren't discovered, so if they tried to go west it would take way to long, and they'd run out of men and/or supplies. Christopher however, was so good at math that he said the world was a pear shape. Yes, he thought is was round on bottom and thinned out near the top. He measured the distance wrong and said it would take four days to go from Europe to India. It took him three months to reach the Indies, where he killed a bunch of kind Native Americans for no reason, and where he never actually stepped foot in North America. His Biography was written as a lie to get more sales, and now you're taught complete lies in school. The next common misconception is vitamin C. It's a complete lie, that vitamin C helps the common cold. It doesn't. Science has tested the effects of vitamin C on the cold, and it does literally nothing. It does however lessen the symptoms, but only sometimes. It's extremely inconsistent, and honestly your body produces everything your body needs, eating is just a way to give your body the energy to carry out those processes. all the vitamins you need, your body makes the majority of them. The last misconception I'll talk about today is water. You're told to drink water while you exercise, or eight glasses a day, this is not just incorrect, it is literally a fatal mistake. If you force yourself to drink water while exercising, since you won't go to the bathroom while you're exercising the water won't be able to get out of your system, in which it will go into your blood cells and possibly get stuck in your tissues. This means two things, first, you'll gain weight, second your blood cells will become hypertonic meaning that water will fill up your blood cells and then they will pop, and this is not good, and possibly fatal. The same with drinking to much water in general. The best amount of water you should drink is, however much you want do. Literally, just drink water when you're thirsty, you'll be fine.
Well that’s what I’ll leave you with today, unless there was a backfire effect hopefully you now know what a misconception is, their negative effects, and that a lot of things you have come to know are lies. That is however, once again, if the backfire effect did not take place. With all of that said, thanks for reading, and peace.
